What is Hands Across The Sand?

Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations. This movement is not about politics; it is about protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife, and fishing industry. Let us share our knowledge, energies and passion for protecting all of the above from the devastating effects of oil drilling.
A Message To The World
Hands Across the Sand is now international. Any person in any country may plan events on this website. This is a peaceful gathering of the people of the world. Planning an event is as simple as this:
- Go to your beach on June 26 at 11 AM in your time zone.
- Form lines in the sand and at 12:00, join hands.
The image is powerful, the message is simple. NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy.
The Movement Started In Florida
In Florida on Saturday, February 13, 2010, a statewide gathering against offshore oil drilling occurred. Thousands of Floridians representing 60 towns and cities and over 90 beaches joined hands to protest the efforts by the Florida Legislature and the US Congress to lift the ban on oil drilling in the near and off shores of Florida. Florida’s Hands Across The Sand event was the largest gathering in the history of Florida united against oil drilling. Thousands joined hands from Jacksonville to Miami Beach and Key West to Pensacola Beach, each against oil drilling in Florida’s waters.
Mission Statement
- To organize a national movement to oppose offshore oil drilling and champion clean energy and renewables. These gatherings will bring thousands of American citizens to our beaches and cities and will draw metaphorical and actual lines in the sand; human lines in the sand against the threat oil drilling poses to America’s coastal economies and marine environment.
- To convince our State Legislators, Governors, Congress and President Obama to stop the expansion of offshore oil drilling and to adopt policies encouraging clean and renewable energy sources. America needs legislation that creates tax incentives and subsidies to encourage the growth of clean energy and renewable industries for America’s future.
An Opportunity of National Importance
Now is the time for America and our leaders to join hands and steer our country’s energy policy away from our dependence on fossil fuels and into the light of clean energy and renewables.
Join hands with us and draw a line in the sand against offshore oil drilling.
“Bands on the Run” was a great turnout yesterday. Rob Armenti and Chris Ross rocked the patio at Wildman and even a guest performer, Nathan Owen, jumped in to jam out. Acoustic Mojo tore it up over at Pizza Hut & Wingstreet with guest Jason Christel on the tamborine. It was an amazing day in Tahoe and such a great turnout we are going to continue the event every Thursday. Keep on keeping it real Tahoe!
The sixth annual Oakley Froggy Surf Comp went down at Steamer Lane this past weekend. The waves were feeble on Saturday, so the wise decision was made to move the comp to Sunday. Mother nature helped out with a couple of workable waves and the comp went off! Nat Young took the win with some insane slashes (see photos below) and Nor Cal talent was well represented by Ashton Madeley, Bud Freitas, Willie Eagleton, Troy Rettig, Danny Hart, Shane Desmond, Flea Virosko, Shaun Burns, and all of the competitors! We were asked to take photos of the event by the Frog Man himself and got some sweet shots. Here is the article from the Santa Cruz Sentinal:
Santa Cruz Sentinel
SANTA CRUZ — Sunday afternoon, the sixth annual Oakley Froggy Surf competition received a bit of divine intervention during the finals of the wave-starved contest.
The event was postponed Saturday due to the dismal conditions. And, much to the dismay of the competitors and event organizer Osh “Frog” Bartlett, things didn’t look much better when they arrived to Steamer Lane bright and early Sunday morning.
“Putting on a local contest is so tough,” said Bartlett while taking apart and packing up the contest scaffolding Sundaynight. “Mother Nature is so fickle, and it’s almost impossible to predict if or if not the ocean will cooperate. You never really know what’s gonna happen.”
This time it cooperated just as the semifinal heats were beginning to wrap up, sending a pulse of waves through the Lane. And Santa Cruz surf star Nat Young took full advantage, picking up whatever waves he could find on his way to winning two division titles: the Pro-Am and the men’s 20-under.
In the men’s 20-under, Young, who is sponsored by Oakley, found a rhythm and put an end to the impressive performance of visiting Mexican pro, Dylan Southworth. In the Pro-Am final, Young had a bit more work cut out for him.
Along with the king of local Pro-Ams Bud Freitas, he faced up-and coming talent Shaun Burns, visiting Hawaiian legend Davey Boy Gonzales, the ever so smooth Ashton Madeley, and the powerhouse known as Anthony Ruffo. Young knew he had to do something.
